Dan Gearino covers the U.S. Midwest, part of InsideClimate New’s National Environment Reporting Network. His coverage deals with the business side of the clean-energy transition and he writes ICN’s Inside Clean Energy newsletter. He came to ICN in 2018 after a nine-year tenure at The Columbus Dispatch, where he covered the business of energy and won state and national awards for his work, including from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers and the National Headliner Awards. Before that, he covered politics and business in his native Iowa and in New Hampshire, working as a newspaper reporter and an occasional radio correspondent. Dan grew up in Warren County, Iowa, south of Des Moines, and is an alumnus of Macalester College in St. Paul. He lives in Columbus, Ohio with his wife and two daughters.

Kathiann M. Kowalski covers the Ohio energy beat for Energy News Network. During her journalism career, Kathi has published 25 books and more than 650 articles. Her work also appears in Science News for Students, Cobblestone, Front Vision and other publications. Before turning to journalism, Kathi practiced environmental law and litigation with a large firm in Cleveland. She graduated from Hofstra University and Harvard Law School, where she was on the Harvard Law Review.Kathi’s reporting fellowships include a Heinrich Boell Foundation Transatlantic Media Fellowship, a CUNY Resilience Fellowship, and programs with the Marine Biological Laboratory and the Institute for Journalism & Natural Resources. Her work has been honored by the Society of Professional Journalists’ Ohio chapters, the ASPCA and other groups.
